Festive Afternoon At Lamlash House

A festive event attended by forty five friends and family members was held at the house on the run-up to Christmas.
One friend commented that "the house was elegantly attired in its Christmas best".
The highlight of the afternoon was a short selection of seasonal and jazz pieces of music played in a rousing manner by Glasgow based quintet Pure Brass.

Season's Greetings!

Lamlash House's Ongoing Restoration and Website Update

It's been just over three months since the last Blog posting. This delay has been due to the volume of work being carried out at the house.
Since the last post in August several packages of work have commenced to the exterior of the house including phase 1 of the ornamental ridge tiles being installed, the partial downtaking of the entrance porch, the lifting of the mosaic tiles at the entrance and the planting of 22 trees and in excess of 20o plants and shrubs. The attic room has also undergone restoration with the reinstatement of the walls, ceiling and floor.
The website has been updated with new information and photographs in the Restoration section.

Lamlash House Homecoming Event is considered a 'triumph' by invited guests
After 10 months of planning, the Lamlash House Homecoming Event took place on Saturday 1 August 2009. Thankfully, after several hours of heavy rain, the weather was dry as the 64 invited guests arrived at the house for a red carpet welcome while piper Iain Melvin played a selection of Scottish pieces.

The event comprised a champagne reception, a formal welcome of guests (including a note of best wishes from First Minister, Alex Salmond), a prelude to Ae fond kiss performed by The Lady Nancy McPherson, a performance of Ae fond kiss and My love is like a red, red rose sung by Mairi MacGregor and accompanied on piano by William Mealyea. Afterwards an animated rendition of Tam O'Shanter was performed by Laura McPherson followed by a recital of Is there, for honest poverty performed by Stuart Muirhead. Ceilidh music was performed by John Allardice.

The evening was concluded with a one-off performance by Kilmarnock duo Fannie and Annie who performed a medley of songs by the late Fran and Anna.

The event was well received by all and £372 was donated by guests on the night for the Ayrshire Hospice.

Ridging the Gap
Due to the extensive stonework restoration over the past month, it's not been possible to update the blog as originally anticipated. However, that doesn't mean that progress has slowed down - in fact, the complete opposite is the case.
The stonework restoration has been completed and the mammoth scaffolding from around the building has now been dismantled. For the first time since Easter, it has been possible to see the house without tubular scaffold and clouds of dust. Photographs of the completed stonework will appear soon on the Stonework section of Lamlash House's website www.lamlashhouse.co.uk/stonework.
Meanwhile, good progress is being made at Hanson Red Bank with the manufacture of terracotta ornamental ridge tiles to replicate the few remaining original tiles from 1889. Here are a few photos of the skilled craftmanship at Red Bank in Derbyshire where the tiles are being made by hand.

Work has also commenced on restoring the entrance portico at Lamlash House. Several elements of the portico have been dismantled to deal with wet rot and other parts are beyond repair and will require to be replicated. Oak for the main support column has been sourced and work is underway with the reproduction of identical timber panels to the original adjacent panels.
Photos to follow.

Hen House Lane
At the end of our first Blog Spot we mentioned that in this edition we would be introducing our neighbours. We've asked Wincey, one of our neighbours who resides in Hen House Lane, to tell you a bit about herself and the other residents of the lane.
Thank you Lamlash House. I'm Wincey, one of three hens who live at Hen House Lane next to Lamlash House. The picture above is of me outside our hen house. My two henmates are Lizzie and Lottie, who are sisters, and they moved into the house with me in 2007. There are some photos of the three of us below.
This is the first time I've been asked to write a blog, so I'm not too sure what I should be writing. I'm a happy chick, who likes nothing more than going shopping for worms, buying the latest feather boa and relaxing in the garden of Lamlash House.
I'm the boss in the hen house. It is my house after all!
Lottie is not the brightest hen in the lane, but don't tell her I told you that. So much so that she's often called 'Clottie Lottie'. I don't know how many times she's put her big feet into the food and water bowls! Lottie's my best friend, and we often explore the garden together for grubs. Lottie's interest include roosting, digging and singing.
Lizzie's the more sensible hen out of the three of us - a mother hen I guess! Her hobbies include knitting, eating grass and having dirt baths.

The three of us have full-time jobs in egg production. It's not too taxing. We produce an egg a day and the rest of the day is leisure time.
It's lovely having a hen house next to Lamlash House as the owners are very good at providing free meals for us. It's the best of organic!
Bye for now.

Premier Blog Spot - Tiling Blues

Welcome to the first full length Blog Spot from Lamlash House.
Over recent weeks much of the time spent at Lamlash House has involved setting up Lamlash House's very own website and preparing various paperwork for Listed Building Consent, Planning Permission and a Building Warrant for a programme of restoration work including stonework restoration which has taken three years of planning and will hopefully be completed by the summer - www.lamlashhouse.co.uk/stonework.
In the past week, work has commenced, since the Christmas holiday period, on tiling the master bedroom's ensuite. It is hoped that this will be completed in the next couple of months to allow a new shower suite to be installed.
In the next Blog we will be profiling our neighbours in Hen House Lane...
